Botox

Botox has become an established brand name in it's own right because it is simple and it works! Although it is widely renowned for it's use on the celebrity circuit, Botox is an affordable treatment that anyone can access.

It is a type A botulinum toxin that has a number of medical uses, but when injected into muscle, it locally blocks the transmission between the nerve endings and muscle fibres around the injection site to temporarily reduce muscle contraction. It relaxes the muscle allowing skin lines and wrinkles to soften, fade or even disappear.

Botox is commonly used to treat frown lines between the eyes (the glabella), forehead lines and lines around the eyes (crow's feet).

The procedure requires no anaesthetic and there are very few side effects. Few patients may experience very light bruising that lasts one or two days and can easily be covered with makeup. Treated muscles typically demonstrate partial reduction in function 2-3 days after botulinum toxin treatment, with maximal reduction 1-2 weeks after treatment.

Muscle function gradually returns 2-5 months after treatment, based on the dose of botulinum toxin used, the area injected and the physiology of the individual patient. However, with repeated treatments of botox, thinning of the muscle occurs resulting in longer lasting results.

Dermal Filler

Dermal fillers can be used alone, or alongside Botox to plump up the skin and "fill out" the lines and wrinkles even further. Again, the effects are very natural looking.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in human skin that helps repair damaged tissue. It is a liquid, however, the hyaluronic acid in a dermal filler has been chemically altered to produce a gel. This means that it lasts considerably longer before being metabolized by the body.

Although, most dermal fillers contain a local anaesthetic agent, patients generally feel more comfortable with an additional local anaesthetic if working around the mouth, or additional topical anaestheic if working elsewhere on the face.

The most common areas treated with dermal fillers are the smile lines around the nose and mouth (naso-labial lines), fine lines above the mouth (peri-oral lines), frown lines between the eyes and acne scars.

Generally, there is some short term swelling or bruising which resolves within 3-5 days.
